and other photography
by David Shaw
One to One Mentorship
Over the last 10 years I have progressed my photography to a level where I feel I could offer advice and support to other people, particularly in the field of Woodland photography.
I have edited thousands of images and walked hundreds of miles to find the best locations for woodland photography in the South West of England.
I do not believe that group workshops are the best way to learn woodland photography given the complexity and seasonal changes these environments present, and as such I would like to offer one to one Mentorships (horrible word I know but one that's recognised in the industry!) to help share this 'knowledge'.
Over 10 sessions in a 12 month period, I'll work with you to see order amongst the chaos, develop a style and develop your voice in this popular and exciting field of photography.

What the mentorship includes:

-
Ten half-day one-to-one field sessions
We’ll work together in carefully chosen local woodlands, photographing in a wide range of conditions. These sessions are tailored entirely to you—your experience level, creative goals, and the areas where you want to grow.
You’ll learn how to:

-
Read woodland light and atmosphere
-
Find order, balance, and intention in visually complex scenes
-
Work creatively with weather, mist, and seasonal change
-
Slow down, observe, and photograph with purpose rather than habit
Each session builds on the last, allowing your confidence and visual language to develop naturally over time.

-
Ongoing advice and support
Between field sessions you’ll have continued access to guidance via email and scheduled video calls. This is where questions get answered, doubts are resolved, and ideas are shaped—keeping momentum going throughout the mentorship.
-
Portfolio feedback & direction
We’ll review your images regularly, looking not just at individual photographs but at how your work functions as a collection.
You’ll receive:

-
Honest, constructive critique
-
Help identifying strengths and recurring themes
-
Guidance on editing, sequencing, and presentation
-
Advice on building a portfolio with clarity and intent
-
Editing & printing workshops (online)
Strong woodland photography doesn’t end in the forest. Dedicated online sessions will cover:

-
Developing a consistent editing style
-
Subtle, natural-looking processing workflows
-
Preparing images for print
-
Paper choice, colour management, and presentation
The aim is to help you produce finished images that stand up both on screen and on the wall.

PRICE - £3,500

Extra Information;
One to one sessions would be offered on Sundays
We will work together to agree the location, but we would target woodlands in Devon, Somerset, Wiltshire, Dorset or Hampshire
The best time to shoot woodlands is usually first light in the morning - so early starts would be strongly recommended
I will tailor the mornings to your fitness level, but the best woodlands often require some physical exertion to get to them
Often the best conditions for woodland photography involve rain and cold, so please dress suitably.
I can transport you from my base, however we would generally meet at the agreed shooting location.
Sessions can be arranged throughout a 12 month period
